Food Safety Music - Microbes Medley - Funny!!!!!!

By Will Mitchell

A two-song medley: "Microbes, They Might Kill You" and "We Are the Microbes" is a parody of Queen's "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions," as performed by Carl Winter.

Summary

This funny video is all about the dangers of microbes that find a way into your food. It explains through song lyrics why many microbes prove harmful to humans who ingest or inhale them. The little green shaped organisms in the video are cartoonish looking microbes. You learn that some microbes may harm you if you don't heat up an item of food like a hamburger well enough. In other types of food, you must always remember to use cautionary measures when eating food, especially if microbes are commonly found in that type of food.

Relevance

We are reminded that allowing spores from microbes to cross-contaminate will just further spread the microbes around, and potentially harm more objects and organisms they touch. You obviously will help reduce the spread of harmful microbes by washing your hands. The microbes that reside in hamburger meat survive in normal temperatures, and need to be heated up a good amount in order to be killed and prevent harm to yourself when eating foods that have those kinds of microbes. We are reminded as well that microbes are often bombarded with all sorts of disinfectants and other items meant to kill the microbes. Examples include chlorine, pH, gamma rays, etc. But, luckily for microbes, they are naturally occurring, and are not wiped out as easily as it might seem. When microbes are threatened, they can turn into virulent strains, and will keep dividing as many times as they can. They are present in the food we eat, they can harm our kidneys, and cause GI damage. Well-known types of microbes include E. coli, clostridium, and salmonella. They can be found in lettuce, sprouts, salami, stew, chicken, soft cheeses, fruit juices, and hamburgers.

  1. What's "0157's deadly if it don't get warm?" Is that some kind of temperature?

    1. Shiga Toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 is the bacteria that the song is referring to. This bacteria can be deadly if it infects a human.

  2. Are there any microbes that might be able to help mankind now or in the future?

    1. Yes, there are many microbes out there that already help mankind. An example of a microbe that helps mankind indirectly is the nitrogen fixating bacteria. These bacteria, living in the roots of plants, actually help them absorb nitrogen from the surrounding soil. The nitrogen is very important for the growth of the plant, and these little bacteria give them an advantage for survival.
